Factors affecting the respiratory control ratio of rabbit heart mitochondria.

چکیده
Factors affecting the respiratory control ratio of isolated rabbit heart mitochondria have been studied. The magnitude of the control ratio was shown to be affected by the presence of endogenous substrates, the nature of exogenous substrate, and the concentrations of mitochondria and of adenosine triphosphate. Higher control ratios were obtained in the presence of endogenous substrates and at a high mitochondrial concentration while lower control ratios usually resulted from an increase in ATP concentration. The endogenous substrates appear to act by maintaining a high capacity for activated respiration. An increase in mitochondrial concentration tended to increase the State 3, and to decrease the State 4 Qoz. An increase in ATP concentration tended to increase the State 4 rate. The respiratory control ratio of a single preparation may vary as a result of alterations in any one or several of these factors. The occurrence of “anomalous” State 3 to 4 transitions has been noted and possible origins of the effect are discussed.

Effects of bilirubin on mitochondrial reactions.
We have studied the effects of bilirubin on respiration, respiratory control, oxidative phosphorylation, and swelling of mitochondria from rat liver, bovine heart, and brain of chick, rabbit, and monkey. Low (<4!0 PM) concentrations of bilirubin increase and high concentrations (>50 PM) decrease the respiration of liver or heart mitochondria. This biphasic effect is not observed in brain mitoch...
متن کاملCisplatin cytotoxicity is dependent on mitochondrial respiration in Saccharomyces cerevisiae
Objective(s): To understand the role of mitochondrial respiration in cisplatin sensitivity, we have employed wild-type and mitochondrial DNA depleted Rho0 yeast cells. Materials and Methods: Wild type and Rho0 yeast cultured in fermentable and non-fermentable sugar containing media, were studied for their sensitivity against cisplatin by monitoring growth curves, oxygen consumption, pH changes ...
متن کاملEffect of Instructional Videos on Postoperative Respiratory Function in Patients Undergoing Off-Pump Open Heart Surgery
Background: Respiratory function in patients undergoing open heart surgery is disrupted after surgery. Patient education on managing complications can reduce occurrence or severity of them. A variety of educational tools has been introduced, but there are controversies about the most appropriate tools. Aim: Determine the effect of instructional videos on respiratory function of the patients af...
متن کاملCytochrome C effect on respiration of heart mitochondria: influence of various factors.
The effect of exogenous cytochrome c on respiration rate of the rat and human heart mitochondria was assessed in situ, using permeabilized fibers. It was (i) much more pronounced in State 2 and 4 than in State 3 with all the respiratory substrates (pyruvate+malate, succinate, palmitoyl-CoA+carnitine and octanoyl-L-carnitine), (ii) different with different substrates, (iii) much higher after isc...
متن کاملBlood oxygenation during hyperpressure intraperitoneal fluid administration in a rabbit model of severe liver injury: Evaluation of a novel concept for control of pre-hospital liver bleeding
Oxygen is an essential part of the most important metabolic pathways in aerobic organisms. Oxygen delivery is merely dependent on blood, rendering blood loss a devastating event. Traumatic pre-hospital liver bleeding is a major cause of early trauma deaths in human and animals, with no established therapeutic method yet. Increasing intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) has been shown to reduce liver b...
